Highlights along the EU's external borders.

7 days from Riga / to Daugavpils

Day 1 Riga - Daugavpils Individual arrival in Riga - the Pearl of the Baltic States. The capital of Latvia is the largest city in the Baltic States. At 1 pm you will meet your guide, who will transfer you along the Daugava River to Daugavpils - the second largest city in Latvia. After arriving in your middle class hotel, you will have time to explore the city on your own before we go out for dinner *. Day 2 Daugavpils - Aglona After breakfast we will visit the fortress of the city of Daugavpils. The fortress, with a total area of 150 hectares, is the most important cultural-historical monument of Daugavpils. The construction was begun in 1810 in anticipation of a Napoleonic attack and expanded until 1878. After the visit of the fortress we go to Aglona. After arriving in Aglona, we will visit the bread museum with a lot of tools used for bread production. After a guided tour through the bakery we enjoy a typical Latvian lunch. Afterwards, a guided tour through the Basilica - the most important Catholic church in the country and the most famous place of pilgrimage in the Baltics awaits us. The church was built between 1768 and 1780 by the Dominican Order and consecrated to the Mother of God. Today several thousands of believers pilgrimages to the Ascension of the Virgin Mary. In 1690, a monastery was established here. Dinner and overnight in a multi-bed room in the Dominican monastery. (B / L / D) Day 3 Aglona - Andrupene - Rezekne After breakfast with the monks, we drive to the village of Andrupene in the middle of Razna National Park. In Andrupene we visit the Ethnographic Muesum - a rural building complex from the beginning of the 20th century. Here you will find, among other things, a rural dwelling-house, a cereal soil, a country-style black sauna and a smithy. After the visit, we will have lunch with local delicacies. The tour then takes us to Rezekne. The city is only 50 kilometers from the Russian border and has always been on the crossroads between the trade routes to Moscow, Riga, Warsaw and St. Petersburg. The archaeological remains of the area were already inhabited by Latggal tribes in the 9th century. In documents, the city was mentioned for the first time in 1285. At the beginning of the 14th century the power passed to the Livonian Order, which built a fortress in the same place. We visit the town, the ruins of the castle and learn about their turbulent history. We spend the evening in Rezekne. (B / L) Day 4 Rezekne - Gulbene - Aluksne After breakfast we will be taken to Gulbene. From here we take the narrow-gauge, 750-mm-wide narrow-gauge railway, which was commissioned in 1903, on a 33-kilometer stretch, with manually set points, past wide meadows and fields that alternate with swampy forest areas to Aluksne. The settlement is located 200 meters high directly on the Aluksne lake of the same name. This makes Aluksne the highest place in Latvia. "Alust" or "Volust" is already mentioned in 1284. The current place name is traced back to the Latggal word "olūksna" (spring in the forest). After an hour-long walk along the ruins of the Ordensburg, we will end the evening. (B) Day 5 Ludza Today we drive to the oldest city in Latvia - Ludza. The founding of Ludza also goes back to the Ordenritter. In 1399 a mighty castle was built. The castle originally had two forts, six towers with a three-storey masonry surrounded by water. During the tour of the city, we will visit the castle ruins, the old town and the oldest synagogue in the Baltics. At the end of the tour we visit the Crafts Center of Ludzas. In the craft center, more than 100 local craftsmen have joined together to preserve and cultivate traditional Latvian craftsmanship traditions. Here you can not only marvel at the old tools, but also, under expert guidance, look over the shoulders of the ceramists, tailors and weavers. The rest of the afternoon is at your own disposal. (B) Day 6 Ludza - Kraslava Today's stage takes us to one of the most beautiful cities in Latvia - Kraslava. The area was already settled in the 9th century and appears in the legends of the Wikinginians under the name "Dynasaiforgarör". The history of the city of Kraslava is closely connected with the count family Plater. It dates from this time, the town castle of the Plater family still standing above the town. After a tour of the site of the town castle, we will visit the Roman Catholic Church - a striking example of the Latghal Baroque. After a walk through the town we reach the local beer brewery. All work steps, on the way to finished beer, are carried out in our own production. During the brewing, honey is added to the beer and gives the finished beer its own unique taste. After the guided tour with a beer tasting, we will drive to our accommodation. For the rest of the day, we end the fire on the banks of the Daugava with a barbecue.
